Something being just a thing doesn't sell anymore. Nowadays everything is a controversy, a scandal, or a -gate.
News that no one would have heard about or cared about is dredged up, spiced with drama and spun according to the narrative of the day.
90% of everything people are offended about is just smoke and mirrors, because reality is plain and boring and uneventful.
