Background: Fluttershy hails from Cloudsdale, and was placed in flight school at a young age similar to other pegasi. However, she is not that good of a flier, and would often face hardships in completing assignments and from fellow students who made fun of her flying ability, or lack there of. While at flight school, she met Rainbow Dash, and the unlikely duo quickly became best friends. Rainbow Dash would often stick up for Fluttershy when she was being bullied.
During one of these bullying attempts, was flung off a cloud accidentally by Rainbow Dash and fell to the ground. She was saved from an untimely demise by a group of butterflies who brought her down to the ground slowly. It was here that Fluttershy found her love for animals, and acquired her cutie mark (mentioned later).
After she was not accepted into the “Junior Speedsters Flight Camp”, Fluttershy decided to move to Ponyville so she could be close to animals and develop a career for herself. While the goodbye with Rainbow Dash was teary, they vowed that they would visit each other and meet again soon. In Ponyville she found a tree that she was able to turn into a home. She set about helping to improve the wildlife in and around ponyville, turning her home into a refuge for animals. In order to make a few bits, she would also help Ponyville’s residents with their pets. It was in Ponyville that she met the owner of the Carousel Boutique, Rarity with whom she developed a fast friendship to fill the void in her heart that was left by Rainbow Dash. Rarity and Fluttershy would meet weekly at the Ponyville day Spa. After a few years, Rainbow Dash got a job as a weather pony in Ponyville, and the two of them were reunited. Fluttershy was now complete in her home in Ponyville with her friends.
Personality: Fluttershy is extremely shy. She has trouble talking to ponies with whom she is not friends, with social interaction and attention often scaring her. However, this shyness does not get in the way of her most important trait; kindness. While the majority of kindness is directed to her animals, who she cares for deeply, she can also be very kind to fellow ponies. A prime example of her kindness is shown when she helps reform Discord and becomes his friend. She is so kind, she is in fact the Element of Kindness.
This mixture of kindness and shyness can lead to problems. In normal situations she shows no aggressiveness nor assertiveness. She is often shortchanged in financial dealings, and she often can not express herself when she is uncomfortable with something. Fluttershy’s friends, especially Rarity, have tried to increase Fluttershy’s assertiveness, such as when Rarity suggested Fluttershy attend an Iron Will assertiveness seminar.
However, Fluttershy can sometimes lapse into bouts of uncontrollable anger. Some examples of this include the Grand Galloping Gala incident, and the time when she was Saddle Ranger in Spike’s magic comic book. This anger is often brought on when somepony or something hurts her friends or animals. As such, when the chips are down, she will fight to the end to save her friends. This trait is also shown to a lesser extent through her ability to do The Stare, a stare that will cause animals to instantly behave.
Cutie Mark: As mentioned above, she achieved her cutie mark after falling to the ground and meeting some animals. When Rainbow Dash performed a sonic rainboom during the incident, the animals were scared off. Fluttershy called them back, and used her soothing personality to convince the animals that all was ok. The animals were convinced, and Fluttershy received her cutie mark, three pink butterflies, that showed her love for, and ability to handle, animals.
Additional: As mentioned above, Fluttershy is the Element of Kindness. The element is represented by a pink butterfly.
Fluttershy also acquired a key to the box in the Tree of Harmony. She acquired this when she helped the Breezies get home, even though most wanted to stay with Fluttershy. Fluttershy remained forceful, and the Breezies were able to get home to their families.
