So, we have a music thread for this, but no gaming- I thought this might be a good idea (Because my 'good ideas' always turn out really well ). So. What are you playing at the moment?
Right at this minute, I'm playing.. how can I put this..erm..I'm playing Dwarf Fortress. Yeah. Moving on..
If you young'uns don't know what dwarf fortress is, well, stay awhile and listen, and I shall educate you..
Long ago, in the distant past of .. well, 2002.. came a game. A roguelike, in fact. But not just any roguelike! A roguelike with city building elements! Your little band of dwarves would be plonked into a randomly generated world and left to fend for themselves. Your first priority is to build a shelter, and in true dwarven style, this is done by digging holes into a mountain somewhere. As your dwarven empire expands, you'll be building a mighty fortress, and you'll dig down into the earth- too greedily and too deeply, one might say. You'll get better resources, which allows you to build many delicious things, including various mechanisms and traps. Does this sound familiar at all? Yep, it's the original Minecraft. Notch looked upon the majesty of dwarf fortress, and he saw that it was good- and then basically took the idea and twisted it into minecraft. And like minecraft, the game is never finished- it's still being developed and getting updates to this day, 10 years after release, and the single developer, Tarn Adams, has said that he expects it to take at least 20 years before he considers it to be 'finished'.
Put simply, it's a fantastic game- I expect a lot of people will be put off by the ASCII graphics, but there are 3rd party graphical interfaces around if that takes your fancy. I only really got into the game recently, but i've had an interest in it for a few years now. Check it out, by all means- it's free, after all
I rambled on a bit more than I'd intended there.. So back to the topic at hand, what are y'all playing?
